Emotional Health in the News

Prince William speaks out about anxiety and suicide. The hashtag #anxietyepidemic has been introduced in coordination with a British conference on Mental Health.

"If another issue took so many lives, there would be outcry. But around suicide only silence.  This has to stop."

I met up with a student last week up at Columbia University who is pushing the University to improve their response to emotional health.  During the past year, there has been a spate of suicides at Columbia.  Here is an article from the NY Post.

Urbanmonks in Winter Recess - regular posts back in February

Currently I am visiting a friend in Brattleboro, Vermont.  It has been fascinating to study a new city.  I will surely do a write-up of what I learned and who I met in this community.  It is a small city of 12,000 with a median age in the forties and a vibrant civic life.  I have been attending at least one community discussion or presentation every day.

While attending a writing group today, I was telling folks that this year was Thoreau's 200th birthday.  One of the members of the discussion sent me this link to Thoreau's visit to Brattleboro.  It chronicles the story of a local hunt of a panther.  Worth a read.

Happy New Year.
